Port Albert Victoria Australia

Location: Port Albert Victoria 3971 Australia

Pop 300.

Location 229 km S.E. of Melbourne 15 km south of Yarram.

Discovered by Angus McMillan in 1841, from the mid 1800s Port Albert was the supply port for GippsIands pioneers until the completion of the Melbourne-Sale railway in 1878. It was Victorias first established port and its long timber jetty frequently berthed ships from Europe and America, as well as welcoming thousands of Chinese on their way to the GippsIand goldfields. The quaint fishing village is off the beaten track and, consequently, more than 40 buildings in a Georgian and Victorian architectural style still exist, including what is believed to be the first licensed hotel in Victoria (1842). Still a commercial fishing port, Port Alberts reputation for recreational fishing and its waters protected by 30 small islands sees its population swell considerably during summer. Relive its early significance at the museum, which records the turbulence of shipwrecks and coastal fishing.
