Blackheath is one of the highest towns above sea level in the Blue Mountains. Here you can enjoy crisp mountain air, brisk walks, great food and cosy accommodation. This historic town is on an escarpment that has spectacular mountain scenery on both sides. It's one of the best places to stay if you want to enjoy some of the highlights of the Blue Mountains National Park has to offer. Govett's Leap Lookout, Evans Lookout, Grose Valley and Hargreaves Lookout are spectacular high-elevation viewing platforms from where you can observe the scenic wonder of this World Heritage Area.

Make sure you take a bushwalk on one of the many walking tracks from Blackheath or nearby. Stay in a quaint guesthouse, dine well in cafes, pubs and restaurants, or play a round of golf at the Blackheath Golf Club, that's lined with cool-climate trees.

Blackheath Rhododendron Festival is held on the first weekend in November - it's a great introduction to the beauty of seasonal gardens in the area.

Historic towns further west include Hartley and Mount Victoria.

If you live in Sydney and are looking for a peaceful place to retreat to for a couple of days, Blackheath will provide that much-needed change of pace you've been craving. Surrounded by natural bushland and breathtaking views, this area of the Blue Mountains is a popular spot for honeymoons and wedding anniversaries.

But there's also plenty on offer for anyone who just wants to get out into the great outdoors and make the most of life. Don't forget to keep an eye out for Australian native birds and wildlife while you're there, as the Blue Mountains is home to several species of animals.

Another feature of Blackheath is the beautifully manicured gardens which proliferate the area. In springtime, you'll be greeted by an array of colourful flowers in bloom, while in autumn the streets turn to gold as the season changes.
