A lovely town with wide tree-lined streets, Scone is home to dozens of studs and world-class thoroughbred breeders. The beautiful area in the Upper Hunter celebrates its equine heritage with several wonderful events, including the 10-day Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival.
Dress up for the Emirates Park Scone Cup Carnival, a two-day event that attracts fine race horses to the second-biggest horse-breeding town in the world. You can tour the horse studs and vineyards in the region with Upper Hunter Book Tours with Experience OZ. Golfers and movie buffs are catered for too, with Scone Golf Club’s nine-hole course and the heritage-listed Scone Civic Theatre, an art deco delight.
Just a few hours’ drive north of Sydney and accessible from Sydney by train, you’ll find accommodation options to suit various budgets, from elegant colonial mansions and holiday cottages to motels, bed and breakfasts, apartments, lakeside holiday parks and farm stays. You can even pitch a tent at Washpools campground in Towarri National Park, north of Scone.
The diverse wilderness is home to abundant wildlife, including gliders, wallabies and glossy-black cockatoos. In warmer months, cool off after bushwalking in the natural Washpools waterhole. Explore the region of scenic drives. East of Towarri is Burning Mountain Nature Reserve, where there’s a 5,500-year-old natural underground fire that is part of the local Aboriginal Dreaming.
