The bustling seaside town of Ulverstone at the mouth of the Leven River is a laid-back getaway with abundant birdlife, family-friendly swimming beaches, coastal paths and scenic picnic spots.
Panoramic views of the town can be seen from the quirky zigzag gardens in Maud Street, and river cruises head 7 km upstream for lunch on the riverbank. There's good fishing to be had in the river and estuary, too.
Ulverstone has an agricultural tradition that continues today. At the Ulverstone History Museum you can step back in time and wander through a display of artefacts, manuscripts, tools and photographs depicting the life of the district's early pioneers.
For the young and young-at-heart, the town's water slide is a summer family favourite, as are the long sandy beaches directly east and west of town. There are also several cycle-ways and walking tracks that criss-cross the waterfront and surrounding parklands.
Inland from Ulverstone is Gunns Plains Cave, featuring fascinating stalactites and stalagmites, an underground creek and unique wildlife that includes the occasional giant freshwater crayfish.
Ulverstone is also a food and shopping hotspot with cafes that serve up great coffee and seasonal produce, galleries and craft stores that feature the work of local artisans, and a wealth of second hand treasures at the many antiques stores and op shops. There are plenty of places to stay too, so it's easy to get into the Ulverstone way of life.
