Coal, The Black Gold, is what Wonthaggi is based on. Home to Victoria’s only winnable underground black coal, Wonthaggi is now rediscovering its history. During the disastrous New South Wales coal strikes at the turn of the century, Wonthaggi and its black coal reserves were exploited by the Victorian Government in response to this national emergency. Wonthaggi is home to a large variety of shops, eateries, supermarkets and accommodation. For entertainment the local theatre presents latest release movies and a variety of shows throughout the year. Join an underground tour at the State Coal Mine - learn about tough nature of mining history. Book Tours with Experience OZ and interpretation points show a town that was controlled by the mine whistle, which is still heard at noon every day.
Walk or cycle along The Bass Coast Rail Trail - Victoria’s only coastal rail trail. Stretching 16 kilometres from Wonthaggi to Anderson, it highlights the area’s rich coal mining history and offers some magnificent views.
Explore the Wonthaggi Wetlands - the North School Wild Flowers Reserve, the Old Rescue Station and the State Coal Mine Above Ground Walk – all easy short walks with wheelchair access.
Kilcunda - home to the Old Kilcunda Rail Bridge, take in the spectacular views with a walk along the cliff tops on the George Bass Coastal Walk to San Remo.
