Adelaide River took on a major role as the location for a huge military base following the bombing of Darwin in 1942 and is now the site of the third largest war cemetery in Australia. Set on the banks of the river, The Adelaide River War Cemetery is the resting place for some 63 civilians and 434 service personnel. Visit military graves and honour civilians killed in the Bombing of Darwin.
Adelaide River Railway Heritage Precinct occupies the area surrounding the historic railway station located on the southern side of the river. The precinct operates as a museum and has several restored vehicles and items of rolling-stock from the original North Australia Railway on display, as well as maintaining the buildings. Stop by the first main station complex on the North Australia Railway, which also played an important role in the Adelaide River military centre.
The Adelaide River Show Society precinct boasts display pavilions, a caravan park, a public swimming pool and the only grass turf racing track in the Northern Territory. The ARSS precinct hosts annual events including the Adelaide River Show and the Adelaide River Races. Enjoy the thrill of a rodeo, camp draft and rural show, showcasing local crafts, cookery, and produce. The Adelaide River Races are held annually at the ARSS Showgrounds. Enjoy a day of outback country horse racing, with fashions on the field, childrens activities, a concert and dance.
Adelaide River is famous for its jumping crocodile cruises. Observe these prehistoric creatures as you cruise along the Adelaide River. Face saltwater crocodiles close up as they leap out of the water to snatch their food.
Visit beautiful Robin Falls, located along Dorat Road off the Stuart Highway near Adelaide River. The cascading falls can be reached after a short stroll through scenic bushlands. The area is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna unique to the Top End.
