The town is famous for the quality of its gemstones. The Andamooka Opal, one of the largest and most famous opal stones, was discovered in and named after Andamooka. It was presented to Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of her first official state visit to Australia.
Twenty four separate fields comprise the Andamooka Opal Fields, giving the area the appearance of a lunar landscape. Visitors can tour the opal fields and fossicking is welcome in certain areas but please check you are not on somebody's 'pegged' claim. There are also numerous places within the town to purchase opal, both privately and commercially.
Historical Miner’s Cottages in the main street are open to tourists all year round. The early semi-dugout homes typified by the Heritage Listed Cottages in the Historical Reserve, are unique to Andamooka and unlike underground homes found in other parts of Australia due to a high clay content in the soil, making it unsafe for large areas to be excavated.
Andamooka is administered by the Outback Areas Community Development Trust instead of a Local Government Area. The layout of the town is very unique as there is no town planning or local council.
